Oster Bread Maker

Oster Bread MakerConsidering an Oster bread maker, don’t get one until you read my review on the one we just purchased. This personal review will show you our results and our experiences. Oster is presently offering three different bread machines and I will include a comparison chart at the end of this review comparing each of them.

But I want to give you our personal result with ours and what we love about it. I must confess I really had no interest in buying any bread machine because I thought they would be such a pain. A friend said they were considering getting one so I started writing a few reviews of some of the more popular models for her. Then, while shopping at our favorite thrift store, I spotted the one we got and the first photo shows it. It looked like it had never been used.

I must admit it is a model that is no longer offered, but is very similar to Oster’s present models. It is the Oster 5814. What a pleasant surprise when we brought it home and made our first loaf of bread. The preparation took my wife all of 10 minutes (or less).

Later I will show the simple ingredients which I ask you to compare with those on a loaf of the bread you get at the food store. But more on that later. After the prep, you place all of the ingredients in the appliance, choose the correct setting based on the kind of bread you are making, and then let it do its magic.

Here is a video showing how easy it is to use one of these. This particular video, which I found to be the most beneficial is using a different brand of bread maker, but as she says, they all basically work the same way.

About three hours later, you pull out the finished loaf of homemade bread. It is almost worth the price just to have the house filled with that wonderful aroma of baking bread. We sliced our first piece and added some butter while it was hot, and oh so delicious. It wasn’t a perfect looking loaf, but the it had a delicious taste.

Now let me discuss the not so perfect look.CIMG5180 No recipe for baking will work perfectly for everyone, everywhere. If everyone was at the same elevation and had the same humidity, maybe a one recipe fits all might work.

Our first loaf was slightly caved in on one end. Just a note, the bread bakes in a vertical position (the container is shown to the right), so the end that caved in was on the top. The newer models bake in the more traditional horizontal position.

I “Googled” it to see what might have caused it and it explained what I just said about different baking conditions. It said either add a couple of tablespoons more flour or slightly reduce the amount of yeast because the bread had risen too much. We added 2 more tablespoons of flour and that corrected it. It might take some trial and error to get it exactly right.

No longer will you have to do all of that kneading, letting it sit then knead some more. Then be real quiet so that the bread will not “fall” and then bake it. Nope, just put it in this little gizmo and it does all of that for you. There is a window on top to watch everything.

One thing we did that was a humorous mistake. Instead of doing this on the kitchen counter like most people, we placed ours on an antique drop leaf table. When it started spinning the dough, the table shook like crazy. I was afraid it was going to come unglued.

After reading tons of reviews on different machines, people tend to blame any problems on the bread maker rather than their own mistakes. Here are some of the mistakes that you will want to avoid, most are just common sense. You can avoid some of the mistakes  on your first loaves if you follow the directions exactly. That required us to purchase some of the ingredients which we didn’t have.

The first and more important is to get a flour that is made specifically for bread. I will show a couple of those towards the end of the review. Make sure you have fresh yeast. I will show everything required for our first loaf later in the review.

If it over bakes the outside slightly, just stop the baking process a couple of minutes early. If it was not baked quite as much as you like just leave it in the machine a few more minutes, it is still hot. Again these should be common sense adjustments. Mine did not come with a Owner’s Manual, but I found it online at this link .

The manual has many different recipes and there are all sorts of others available online. Here are all of the simple ingredients needed to make a simple loaf of bread, this one is  for white bread which might be a good one to try first.

These are all of the things you need: water, butter or margarine, Gold Medal Better for Bread flour, sugar, dry mile, salt, regular active dry yeast or bread machine yeast (also OK to use quick acting dry yeast)

For all of you that are health conscious, just check those above ingredients against those that are on the loaf you bought from the store. It can be really scary if you check out what some of those can do to our body. And you can purchase stone ground wheat flour which is healthier than the more common white flour. That’s next on our list.

But that is getting off topic. Just go on the taste of this home made bread compared to a store bought one. Here is the comparison chart I promised earlier. Note that these all make up to 2 pound loaves while ours will only bake up to 1 1/2 pound ones. They bake the loaves in the horizontal position rather than vertically like ours and also bake a loaf much faster. So they have made some helpful improvements since ours. The first two models are the most popular, but the last two have a slightly higher customer rating, but all are at least a 4 star. I don’t think you would go wrong with any of them. The Oster CKSTBRTW20 is the second best selling bread maker on Amazon and has a higher rating and half the price of the #1 seller.

Here is a link to the bread flours, including the Gold Medal brand. And finally, you might well need a good bread knife, I think we will be getting one. Many, if not most, knives don’t do a great job of cutting bread slices. While you are on Amazon, take a look at bread knives if you don’t have one.
